Mikel Arteta’s Speaks Out on Online Threats

Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta, has revealed that he and his family members have received online threats.

High-profile football players, managers and match officials have been on the receiving end of racial abuse on social media, and now the Gunners boss is the latest victim. 

The 38-year-old Spaniard held a press conference on Friday, 12 February, ahead of his side’s clash against Leeds United on Sunday, 14 February – in which he appealed to social media companies to take a stricter stance against online abuse. 

He said: “I’d prefer not to [speak about it] but I think we’re all exposed to that in this industry. It is not going to stop tomorrow, we know that, but medium, long-term, can we do something about it? That’s what I am pushing for”. 

Arteta added: “That’s reality. It’s not pleasant when they go personal against me, but I can take it. When the family is involved, then it’s a different story.”  

Arteta’s revelation follows the news that Newcastle boss, Steve Bruce, and English referee Mike Dean both complained of threatening online messages.
